Amhara Universities Forum was established in september 1, 2000

Agricultural Research and Training Platform (ARTP) was established in November, 2012, latter changed its name to the Forum for Higher Educational Institutes in Amhara Region (FHEIAR). Member of the Forum are: 10 universities, key actors-ANRS Bureaus, NGOs, Research Institutes, etc. Purposes of the forum are: a. to create a dynamic platform for research coordination, resource mobilization (human and material), rendering community engagement, TT, promote interchange and cooperation among universities and partners for the betterment of the community in the Amhara National Regional State. b. The Forum enables the member universities to address developmental challenges and become an effective voice in regional and national discourse. The Forum for Higher Education Institutions in the Amhara Region: A Catalyst for Regional Development and Social Transformation Legal Establishment The Forum for Higher Education Institutions in the Amhara Region (FHEIAR) is a legally registered and licensed organization under the Amhara National Regional State Charities and Societies Registration and Administration Proclamation No. 194/2012, Article 63(1). It was originally issued its certificate on April 8, 2014, and its registration has been renewed in accordance with Article 71(1) of the proclamation. The current certificate, issued on February 8, 2024, is valid until February 7, 2027. FHEIAR is a non-profit and non-political civic organization with the primary goal of improving social conditions in the region. It serves as a platform for research, consultation, cooperation, and collaboration on issues related to higher education and regional development. Achievements Over the past five to six years, the Forum has accomplished significant milestones with the active participation of the community, regional bureaus, and other stakeholders. Key achievements include: i). COVID-19 Response and Problem-Solving Initiatives During the COVID-19 pandemic and other man-made and natural challenges, the Forum established a dedicated team for problem analysis, solution generation, and implementation. This effort allowed FHEIAR to demonstrate its commitment to supporting the community and addressing the region's pressing needs. ii). Agricultural Innovation and Mechanization FHEIAR played a pivotal role in promoting summer irrigation farming, particularly for crops such as wheat and barley. The Forum introduced and expanded mechanized farming techniques, encouraging farmers to organize into clusters and adopt tractor-based farming. This initiative also included farm-led seed multiplication programs, which helped farmers enhance productivity and embrace modern agricultural practices. iii). Human Resource Development The Forum facilitated scholarships for regional civil servants, working closely with the ten universities in the region to support the development of a skilled workforce. iv). Strategic Policy Development A team of experienced scholars under the Forum developed strategic documents and policies aimed at transforming the region's political, economic, and social landscape. Despite limited implementation by regional authorities, these strategies addressed potential conflicts and proposed solutions to meet the demands of the Amhara people. v). Collaborative Research Projects FHEIAR collaborated with regional bureaus to conduct joint research projects addressing critical challenges. To date, four projects have been completed on topics requested by the respective bureaus. vi). Education Sector Support In partnership with the Amhara Region’s Education Bureau, universities, and schools, the Forum implemented programs to improve education quality. These efforts included mentoring, supervision, training, resource-sharing, and the establishment of digital libraries. Additionally, universities have initiated the construction of boarding schools and community schools to enhance academic performance. vii). Health Sector Engagement FHEIAR actively participated in health campaigns, awareness initiatives, and the provision of medical equipment, medicines, and furniture to health institutions. Through collaboration with teaching and referral hospitals, the Forum supported clinical trials, internships, joint research projects, and healthcare delivery improvements. viii).
